Time Management and Boundaries

As I have written many times before, we live in a fast paced world where business runs 24/7 and we are connected to work via emails and phone calls after hours.
We have put work first and ourselves second and it’s time to change that. We are now living to work not working to live. So what do we do about it?
Well it’s called time management and setting boundaries. So some tricks I use is to manage my diary effectively.
I am a morning person, so I start work early and finish early. I’m in the office by 7am and I finish at 4pm. So in my diary, I have blocked out my calendar from 4pm each afternoon so no appointments can be set after that time. 4pm is my gym time. I also review my calendar each morning to determine when I can fit in lunch. It’s important to eat lunch.
It’s important to set boundaries as well for what you will do for work outside of office hours. As a manager, I am on my emails all the time, however I have had to set some boundaries for myself. I see the emails as they come through on my phone, however, if it’s not urgent, I don’t respond until I return to work and my staff now know that I do not respond to emails outside of office hours unless it’s urgent.
Another boundary I set is to not bring home my work laptop. When you bring home your work laptop, you are giving yourself permission to do work outside of work. Yes work can build up, short deadlines and not enough time. Occasionally this happens and when that happens, I go to work an hour or two early and close my door and smash out, but this is a rarity.
Time management is so important in assisting you with your health and ensuring you have a good work/life balance. So look at your calendar and set yourself some boundaries and it’s ok to prioritise your personal life.
