Why is it so important to be mindful of active listening? With people so ambitious and wanting to project their careers and fast, people often mistake the quiet ones as either weak or they cannot express themselves so not ready for that next step. However, they may be active listening, taking everything in, analysing in their mind all the facts and figures and then coming to a very logical and well thought solution.
Active listening is so important in the business world and successful leaders need to identify individuals who are active listening and not just listen to the loudest and most persistent in the team.
With a world so fast paced and a million things running through people’s minds, we quite often think out loud on the hop, but is this the most effective way of running a business. I would much rather less chatter and more deep thinking and active listening.
We waste a lot of time in meetings however if run correctly, a meeting should be a short sharp discussion where everyone is prepared with their thoughts and a debate can happen and everyone is heard. Even the quiet ones who are active listening.
As leaders, we do need to probe everyone in the meeting picking up on under tones to probe further to get the best out of our employees.
As leaders, having a team that is cohesive will ensure success to the business. Each member of the team should feel that they contribute to a successful business and most importantly management listens to them and their ideas. When this doesn’t happen, they feel disconnected, they stop caring about their work and then we as leaders have a big problem.
It’s not just employees that need to learn active listening, it’s leaders as well. A successful leader active listens. They need to create an environment where their employees feel safe to speak their mind and share ideas and show interest in what their employees are saying.
So are you creating the safe space and actively listening?
