Leaders cannot look after their teams if they are not looking after themselves.

Being a leader means you are responsible for your team and quite often your time is absorbed by making sure your team is well but who is looking after you?

Being a leader is demanding with deadlines and staffing and then there is responsibilities at home as well. So at the end of the day we make excuses that we don’t have time for exercise, eating healthy or mindfulness.

We need leaders to shift their thinking. As a leader, you have to lead by example and you need to prioritise yourself. I understand what is like, I have been there, your physically exhausted working big hours and you forego exercise and good nutrition and guess what suffered? My health. My waistline was expanding and blood pressure going up and down like a yo-yo. Something had to give.

Now I prioritise my wellness. I am back in the gym 5-6 days a week. I’m also doing meal prep on days off in case something comes up during the week, I have healthy meals in the freezer to grab on the go.

There is a direct correlation between the leader and the team dynamics. One thing I notice with my team is that the day and their attitudes depends on my attitude and how I walk into the office each day. If I walk in with a positive and up beat attitude and greet the staff with a big good morning and smile, it rubs off on the staff. The leader sets the scene for how the day will run. Ultimately having a great team dynamic and setting the right scene with the staff, it will also rub off on good customer service.

All leaders needs to ensure that they are finding the balance and one thing in their day that makes them happy. For me it’s a gym workout, others it could be picking up their kids from school or making sure that they are home for dinner with the family. If the leader can do this one thing in their day, it will ensure that they are looking after their mindfulness and more likely have a positive outlook to work.

Leaders mental health and well-being is such an important topic which often gets overlooked as we are too busy looking after our teams mental health and well-being but make sure you are scheduling time in your schedule for the one thing in the day that makes you happy.

We need leaders to start prioritising themselves as they cannot look after their teams if they are not. We need leaders to start leading by example and creating healthy workplaces.
