Oh No, I am a Perfectionist. Now What?

Why do we put so much pressure on ourselves? Why do we always have to strive for perfection?

I like to think that my perfectionism was inherited from my parents. Both my parents worked very hard during their careers and I was brought up with respect, ethics and morals. They instilled into me at a very young age of what the work place is meant to be and that laziness would not be tolerated by employers. I also remember getting advice in my early 20’s from a very close family friend who was in corporate business and an employer of 100’s of staff, he told me that work is like a bank. You put in more than what you take out. This philosophy has been a part of my being for the last 20 years of my career and I have been very fortunate to have climbed the ladder very quickly and been recognized for my work.

However, I feel that the times are changing and society is changing, we are placing more and more demands on our employers for a better work/life balance, unacceptable demands on deadlines are being told No to bosses and people are wanting more flexible working arrangements.

I think this shift of a better work/life balance is a good one, especially from a health prospective. I was watching a Dr in the USA on tv who said that currently 66% of Americans are overweight. Well if you are not shocked by this figure, you should be. How have we let ourselves get to this stage.

Well we tend to blame the employers and their deadlines and that is a big part of it, but we also have to take responsibility ourselves and stop letting our perfectionism get in the way and if our work load is to big and you are doing ridiculous hours, then you have to stand up and say no. Let your perfectionism take a hit and say you cannot take on an additional project, you just don’t have the time capability. Don’t put yourself under added pressure.

As a perfectionist myself, quite often, I will miss my gym session as I am just too busy at work. or I will work through my Lunch Break.

I hear you, we are all in the same boat. I am working through this, are you?
