We all know that stress is a leading cause of heart risks, however, as a society, we are living with stress everyday so it is important to manage that stress. Why in workplaces, do we not place greater importance on workforce stress?
As an employer, i look very closely at my teams workloads, check in with them regularly about their mental health and their teams mental health. I understand the importance of stress. As someone living with High Blood pressure, I am acutely aware that I need to manage my stress as i am now in my forties and now in the risk age group for heart attack.
Stress should be classified as a medical condition and all employers should monitor their staff for signs of stress. Continued high level stress will also lead to burn out and thats when good employees leave.
As a society, our work life balance has been diminishing for years into more work and less life. The cost of living is getting out of control and more people are even taking on two jobs just to survive.
The COVID pandemic has placed a new level of stress onto everyone. Everyone has their own COVID Story and how it has affected them. I was reading the other day that scientists are now linking COVID to trauma. Many have lost friends and families over the last two years, many have been juggling working from home and home life, home schooling children, not being able to see their loved ones and the list goes on.
So how have you been managing your stress? For me, my stress relief is always exercise and yes, I have also been neglecting this in the last two years. I have only recently last year really made a commitment to myself to get back into it.
Taking a break is also great for clarity and sets you back into a positive mindset and gives you a good prospective. Things that are happening when you are in the moment, can seem like that everything is spiralling out of control, but when you have some time to really think about it, you say to yourself, well that wasn’t really as bad as what i thought it was and gives you the opportunity to get the issues fixed very easily when you are in a positive mindset. All of a sudden the stress lifts and you are back in your A game.
There are so many things that you can do for stress relief and it is entirely what makes you happy and to forget the world for a small amount of time. For most people, Time is of the essence so even 30 mins a day will benefit you. There is exercise, yoga, meditation, reading, cooking, journalling, painting, writing and the list goes on.
There is also help out there as well to help you with your stress. There are life coaches and executive coaches who can help you devise strategies to engage to help with your current work load and help you with clarity and prospective.
Whatever you choose, make sure that you take 30 mins out of your day to smell the roses and manage your stress.
